Landscaping and Grading around a Pool

The successful completion of phase two, focusing on Landscaping and Grading around a Pool in Kannapolis, North Carolina, marks a significant step in transforming a poolside area into a cohesive and visually stunning outdoor oasis. Proper grading is fundamental in such projects, ensuring that water effectively drains away from the pool and surrounding structures, preventing erosion and potential water damage while creating a stable foundation for all subsequent landscaping elements. Once the practical aspects of site preparation are handled, the artistry of landscape design can truly flourish.

In this Kannapolis project, the thoughtful definition of two new landscaping beds immediately began to shape the environment. By meticulously hand-digging a clean bed edge, approximately two inches deep, a crisp, professional distinction was created between lawn areas and planting zones. All related debris from this process was carefully hauled away, ensuring a neat and tidy canvas for the new plantings. The selection and installation of a diverse array of plants, each chosen for its unique characteristics and suitability for a poolside setting, was central to bringing the design to life. Rich topsoil was incorporated to give each plant a healthy start.

The plant palette was curated to provide a variety of textures, colors, and forms. Twelve 3-gallon Autumn Ferns were introduced, likely chosen for their feathery fronds that offer year-round interest and thrive in shadier spots often found around pool structures or under larger plantings. Five 3-gallon ColorGuard Yuccas bring a striking, architectural element with their bold, sword-like, variegated leaves, adding a touch of drought-tolerant drama. Complementing these were five 3-gallon Goshiki Osmanthus, prized for their holly-like, five-colored variegated foliage and fragrant fall blooms. Nine 3-gallon Miscanthus, a popular ornamental grass, were planted to introduce graceful movement and vertical interest. Adding further diversity, four other 3-gallon Yuccas and four 3-gallon FirePower Nandinas were incorporated, the latter known for its vibrant red winter foliage. For a touch of tropical elegance, two 7-gallon Windmill Palm Trees were strategically placed, adding height and a resort-like feel.

To unify the planting beds and provide practical benefits, ten yards of double-hammered hardwood mulch were applied. This type of mulch is excellent for retaining soil moisture, suppressing weeds, and providing a finished, manicured look. Finally, the backyard’s specified area underwent grading, and approximately six yards of LawnMax topsoil were installed, followed by fescue grass seed to establish a lush new lawn area, completing the transformation and truly Making Homes More Beautiful®.
