Grading and a Batting Cage

Transforming a backyard into a specialized space for family activities requires careful planning and a significant amount of foundational work. This was a true team effort in Charlotte as school is back, with a focus on a unique project involving Grading and a Batting Cage. As families settle into the autumn school and sports season, creating a dedicated home practice area is a fantastic way to support young athletes and encourage outdoor activity. This project began by clearing an underutilized section of the property. We tore down trees that were in the way and professionally grinded the stumps below the surface to create a completely clean slate for the new construction.

With the area cleared, the essential work of earth moving began. We graded the land to create a perfectly level and stable pad for the batting cage. Proper grading is critical not just for a flat playing surface, but also for ensuring that rainwater drains correctly away from the area, preventing it from becoming a soggy, unusable mess. To support the new grade and prevent future erosion from the surrounding landscape, we installed a base of “clean” #67 stone. This specific gravel provides excellent drainage and a firm foundation. Large boulders were then strategically placed to act as a natural and attractive retaining wall, holding back the soil and adding a rugged aesthetic to the perimeter.

Once this crucial groundwork was complete, we then assisted in the Artificial Turf and batting cage construction. Artificial turf is the ideal surface for a high-use athletic space like this, offering a durable, low-maintenance, and consistently even playing field without the need for mowing or watering. This project perfectly illustrates how a functional and fun recreational space is built from the ground up, starting with professional site preparation to ensure it performs beautifully for years to come.
