This Charlotte, NC homeowner needed an outdoor space that solved a specific problem — drainage, sloped grading, an underused yard, or a transition between indoor and outdoor living — without compromising the look of the home. The Design & Material Selection

For this project we specified Flagstone, chosen for durability in Charlotte's freeze-thaw cycles and for the way the color and texture sit against the home's existing architecture. The layout was drawn to match the home's sight lines, the lawn's natural grade, and the way the family moves between the house, patio, and yard.

The Final Result

When considering how to navigate the side yards or garden spaces of a property, many homeowners automatically default to poured concrete or solid pavers. However, there is a softer, more organic alternative that brings a touch of rustic charm and texture to the landscape. A lovely looking Dryscape idea to get around a home that’s not concrete of a Hardscape is a nice Pea Gravel Pathway. This material choice offers a permeable surface that allows rainwater to return naturally to the soil, significantly reducing runoff issues while providing a satisfying auditory crunch underfoot that signals a transition into a more relaxed zone of the home.

In this specific installation, a Pea Gravel Pathway was installed with a few TN brown natural stone flagstones strategically placed per the Charlotte homeowners instructions. The integration of these larger stones is a brilliant functional and aesthetic design move. While pea gravel provides a uniform, textured base, the addition of the “TN Brown” (Tennessee Brown) flagstones creates stable, flat landing pads for foot traffic. This ensures a firm footing and prevents the “sinking” feeling sometimes associated with deep gravel beds. The earth tones of the flagstone—rich with tans, rusts, and browns—harmonize perfectly with the lighter, neutral hues of the pea gravel, creating a visual depth that a monochromatic sidewalk simply cannot achieve.
