Custom Paver Walkway in Charlotte, NC
The Challenge
This Charlotte, NC homeowner needed an outdoor space that solved a specific problem — drainage, sloped grading, an underused yard, or a transition between indoor and outdoor living — without compromising the look of the home. Our team scoped the site, identified the constraints, and proposed a design built around the way the family actually uses the space.
The Design & Material Selection
For this project we specified Techo-Bloc pavers, chosen for durability in Charlotte's freeze-thaw cycles and for the way the color and texture sit against the home's existing architecture. The layout was drawn to match the home's sight lines, the lawn's natural grade, and the way the family moves between the house, patio, and yard.
The Final Result
While it’s true that many beautiful homes in the Charlotte area feature Travertine around a Pool, achieving a truly exceptional outdoor oasis requires more than just a premium deck surface. Only a fine few showcase a masterful balance of Travertine, Hardscape, Dryscape, Greenscape, and Landscaping as part of a comprehensive “post pool project.” It is this thoughtful integration of diverse elements that elevates a simple poolside area into a sophisticated and multi-layered outdoor living environment, designed for both stunning beauty and practical enjoyment.
A prime example of this harmonious design features luxurious Ivory Travertine as its foundation. This classic natural stone is a superb choice for poolside applications, celebrated for its ability to stay remarkably cool under the hot Carolina sun and for its naturally porous, slip-resistant texture. The light, elegant tones of Ivory Travertine create a bright and welcoming atmosphere, setting a high-end, resort-like tone for the entire space.
Building upon this foundation, the design incorporates a modern Techo-Bloc Mini Creta Architectural Wall. This versatile hardscape element can be used to create stylish seating walls, define planting beds, or manage changes in elevation, all while providing a sleek, contemporary contrast to the timeless look of the travertine. For the “Greenscape” component, artificial turf is cleverly utilized. This provides a lush, evergreen expanse that requires no mowing, eliminates the problem of grass clippings dirtying the pool, and ensures there are no muddy patches, even after a summer rain shower.
To create a more organic transition to other parts of the yard, a Natural Flagstone Pathway meanders through the landscape. The irregular shapes and rustic texture of the flagstone offer a beautiful counterpoint to the more formal cut of the travertine, guiding movement with a sense of natural discovery. The most dramatic “Dryscape” element is a striking Boulder Wall. This feature serves a dual purpose, acting as a robust retaining wall while also introducing a powerful, sculptural element of natural stone that adds texture, depth, and a sense of permanence to the landscape. The interplay of these carefully selected components—the refined travertine, the clean architectural wall, the practical turf, the rustic pathway, and the massive boulders—creates a dynamic and beautifully balanced setting, perfectly illustrating the art of Making Homes More Beautiful®.
