Custom Paver Patio in Charlotte, NC
The Challenge
This Charlotte, NC homeowner needed an outdoor space that solved a specific problem — drainage, sloped grading, an underused yard, or a transition between indoor and outdoor living — without compromising the look of the home. Our team scoped the site, identified the constraints, and proposed a design built around the way the family actually uses the space.
The Design & Material Selection
For this project we specified Belgard pavers, chosen for durability in Charlotte's freeze-thaw cycles and for the way the color and texture sit against the home's existing architecture. The layout was drawn to match the home's sight lines, the lawn's natural grade, and the way the family moves between the house, patio, and yard.
The Final Result
We recently embarked on an elaborate landscaping project that significantly elevated the aesthetic and functional aspects of an outdoor living space. The centerpiece of this transformation was the installation of a magnificent Belgard Holland Guilford Blend Paver Pathway. This pathway was carefully laid out in a striking 1-piece herringbone pattern, which not only enhances the visual appeal but also offers a practical, durable walking surface. The pathway was constructed with a robust ABC base, tamped down to approximately 4 inches, ensuring a solid foundation resistant to shifting and settling. Above this base, we added fine screenings to create a smooth, even surface, and used Snapedge bordering to achieve crisp, clean lines. To secure the pavers in place and prevent weed growth between them, we used nails and filled the joints with gray Polymeric sand, known for its strength and flexibility.
Alongside the pathway, we crafted two new landscaping beds that immediately enhance the garden’s structure and depth. These beds were defined with a neatly hand-dug edge, approximately 2 inches deep, which provides a clear demarcation from the lawn, simplifying maintenance and creating a more organized appearance. The grass and related debris from the excavation were removed promptly, leaving the site pristine.
To populate these beds, we installed 16 Wintergreen Boxwoods, each carefully selected from 3-gallon nurseries for their lush, evergreen foliage and robust health. These boxwoods are ideal for creating low, dense hedges that not only add to the privacy but also contribute to the year-round greenery of the garden. The installation included enriching the soil with topsoil, and the customer provided mulch, which helps in moisture retention and weed suppression, further simplifying garden care.
This comprehensive landscaping upgrade not only beautifies the property but also enhances its usability and enjoyment. Whether it’s taking a leisurely stroll along the new path or enjoying the privacy and greenery provided by the boxwoods, the enhanced outdoor space invites relaxation and enjoyment, reflecting a perfect harmony between form and function.
