The Challenge

This Charlotte, NC homeowner needed an outdoor space that solved a specific problem — drainage, sloped grading, an underused yard, or a transition between indoor and outdoor living — without compromising the look of the home. Our team scoped the site, identified the constraints, and proposed a design built around the way the family actually uses the space.

The Design & Material Selection

For this project we specified Concrete pavers, chosen for durability in Charlotte's freeze-thaw cycles and for the way the color and texture sit against the home's existing architecture. The layout was drawn to match the home's sight lines, the lawn's natural grade, and the way the family moves between the house, patio, and yard.

The Final Result

A professional Patio Cleaning service can be a transformative experience for an older hardscape. By utilizing a specialized Hardscape efflorescence cleaner and Polymeric Sand, it is possible to significantly make an older patio much better. Over time, pavers in the Charlotte region can develop a white, chalky residue called efflorescence, which dulls the original color. A professional cleaner safely removes this buildup, restoring the stone’s vibrancy. The second step, replenishing the polymeric sand, is just as crucial. It re-establishes the interlock between the pavers, ensures the patio remains stable, and provides a powerful barrier against weed growth and ant hills.

This process, however, sometimes highlights a common misunderstanding about certain paver styles. The blue tape at this home in Charlotte was from the customer, who thought the job was done incorrectly when we went to review in person to be paid in full. The tape was placed along the paver joints, indicating the homeowner believed the sand had not been fully installed.

This provided an important opportunity for education. The cobble stone pavers are pillowed, which means they have soft, rounded edges designed to create a classic, rustic appearance. With this style of paver, the seams are meant to show slightly, creating shadow lines and definition that are part of the intended aesthetic. The purpose of the Polymeric Sand is to help bond the pavers together and prevent weeds by filling the joint below the rounded edge, not to sit flush with the top surface like tile grout.

The Patio Cleaning was done by trusted professionals, and this professionalism includes communication. After a meaningful conversation explaining the nature of pillowed pavers and the proper function of the sand, the customer agreed that the blue tape was a mistake and was, in fact, thrilled with the clean, restored, and secure patio.
