The Challenge

This Fort Mill homeowner needed an outdoor space that solved a specific problem — drainage, sloped grading, an underused yard, or a transition between indoor and outdoor living — without compromising the look of the home. Our team scoped the site, identified the constraints, and proposed a design built around the way the family actually uses the space.

The Design & Material Selection

For this project we specified River Rock, chosen for durability in Charlotte's freeze-thaw cycles and for the way the color and texture sit against the home's existing architecture. The layout was drawn to match the home's sight lines, the lawn's natural grade, and the way the family moves between the house, patio, and yard.

The Final Result

When a fence is located at the bottom of a swale adjacent to a large berm in a community as wonderful as Waterside at the Catawba in Fort Mill, SC, it can sometimes create drainage challenges. Water tends to accumulate, creating a muddy mess where grass simply refuses to grow. Homeowners in this beautiful area might find themselves wondering how to resolve this issue without compromising the aesthetics of their outdoor space.

The solution? Drainage Solutions. This outdoor living project is all about addressing water flow and erosion issues with a durable and effective approach. By installing six tons of TN River Rock, ranging in size from 2″ to 5″, the dry creek bed is designed to help redirect water and prevent future erosion. The use of landscape fabric and staples ensures that the rock stays in place and continues to serve its purpose over time.

But the project doesn’t stop there. To further improve drainage, a 67-stone base is installed, and approximately 70 feet of perforated corrugated pipe is laid within the dry creek bed to act as a French drain. This system directs excess water to the sewer drain, effectively preventing water from pooling and damaging the yard. By incorporating such an advanced drainage system, water management becomes more efficient, and the chances of muddy, unusable areas in the yard are significantly reduced.

The process also includes removing and hauling away debris, leaving the area clean and ready for homeowners to enjoy. Not only does this project solve drainage issues, but it also adds a decorative element to the yard. A well-constructed dry creek bed can enhance the overall beauty of the landscape, making the space more visually appealing.

Ultimately, this drainage solution ensures that the yard remains functional and beautiful, even after heavy rain. Homeowners in Waterside at the Catawba can now enjoy their outdoor space without worrying about mud or standing water. A well-executed drainage system like this makes homes more beautiful and functional.
