Custom Outdoor Living Project in Charlotte, NC
The Challenge
This Charlotte, NC homeowner needed an outdoor space that solved a specific problem — drainage, sloped grading, an underused yard, or a transition between indoor and outdoor living — without compromising the look of the home. Our team scoped the site, identified the constraints, and proposed a design built around the way the family actually uses the space.
The Design & Material Selection
For this project we specified River Rock, chosen for durability in Charlotte's freeze-thaw cycles and for the way the color and texture sit against the home's existing architecture. The layout was drawn to match the home's sight lines, the lawn's natural grade, and the way the family moves between the house, patio, and yard.
The Final Result
One of the most effective ways to manage water and prevent erosion on a property is by installing a Boulder Wall, River Rock, and Mulch combination. For this particular project, the focus was on the side of the home, which is a key area prone to water runoff and soil erosion. This phase one installation aims to create both a functional and visually appealing solution to water management, while also contributing to the overall beauty of the property.
Boulder walls are not just practical, but they also add a natural and rugged aesthetic to outdoor spaces. The large stones create a sturdy barrier that can help redirect water flow, preventing excessive runoff from damaging landscaping or flooding low-lying areas of the yard. When combined with River Rock, the boulder wall also helps to disperse water evenly, reducing the likelihood of soil erosion and keeping the surrounding area well-drained.
In addition to their water management benefits, boulder walls can also serve as a stunning landscaping feature. The natural appearance of the stones blends seamlessly into outdoor environments, complementing gardens, lawns, or other hardscaping elements. Homeowners often choose to incorporate mulch around these areas to add another layer of erosion control, while also helping plants retain moisture.
Mulch is a particularly useful addition, as it not only helps prevent erosion but also enhances the overall look of the landscape. It creates a clean, finished appearance around the base of trees and plants, while also providing much-needed nutrients to the soil as it breaks down over time. The combination of the Boulder Wall, River Rock, and Mulch creates a comprehensive landscaping solution that addresses practical concerns while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the property.
By installing a Boulder Wall along the side of the home, homeowners can effectively manage water, reduce the risk of erosion, and add value to their outdoor space. This is a great example of how functional elements can also enhance the beauty of a home’s exterior.
