Custom Retaining Wall in Charlotte, NC
The Challenge
This Charlotte, NC homeowner needed an outdoor space that solved a specific problem — drainage, sloped grading, an underused yard, or a transition between indoor and outdoor living — without compromising the look of the home. Our team scoped the site, identified the constraints, and proposed a design built around the way the family actually uses the space.
The Design & Material Selection
For this project we specified premium hardscape materials, chosen for durability in Charlotte's freeze-thaw cycles and for the way the color and texture sit against the home's existing architecture. The layout was drawn to match the home's sight lines, the lawn's natural grade, and the way the family moves between the house, patio, and yard.
The Final Result
Having Great Landscaping Ideas is the spark that ignites a transformation, but the bridge between a vision and reality is a meticulous, well-thought-out plan. Before the magnificent crew installs a bunch of Plantings, big boulders, retaining wall and more, the blueprint must be finalized to ensuring every element interacts harmoniously with the land. An experienced Exterior Designer in Charlotte needs to have a plan to execute, one that considers not just the aesthetics of today, but the growth of the landscape five, ten, and twenty years down the road. This foresight prevents common pitfalls like overcrowding, drainage issues, or plants being placed in conditions where they will struggle to thrive.
In this specific project, the challenge was to turn a functional necessity into a visual asset. The variety of elements to create a spectacular Outdoor Living space utilizing berm beautification was a key to the success of the design. Berms—mounded hills of soil—are often used to block noise or create privacy, but without a design strategy, they can look like simple piles of dirt. Here, the designer used the elevation changes of the berm to showcase a layered planting scheme. Tall, architectural evergreens were placed at the peak to maximize screening height, while cascading shrubs and vibrant perennials were arranged on the slopes to create a tapestry of color and texture.
To anchor this “living hill,” massive natural boulders were integrated into the hillside. These stone features add a sense of permanence and rugged beauty, contrasting with the softness of the foliage. A structural retaining wall was also incorporated at the base, serving a dual purpose: it prevents soil erosion and creates a crisp, clean edge that defines the border of the manicured lawn. By weaving together these diverse components—structural stone, undulating earth, and vibrant flora—the project transcends standard landscaping. It becomes a cohesive environment where engineering meets art. This deliberate, planning-first approach is the only way to ensure complex features work in unison, ultimately fulfilling the promise of Making Homes More Beautiful® by turning a challenging terrain into a breathtaking focal point.
