The Challenge

This Charlotte, NC homeowner needed an outdoor space that solved a specific problem — drainage, sloped grading, an underused yard, or a transition between indoor and outdoor living — without compromising the look of the home. Our team scoped the site, identified the constraints, and proposed a design built around the way the family actually uses the space.

The Design & Material Selection

For this project we specified Belgard Arctic Cambridge Cobble pavers, chosen for durability in Charlotte's freeze-thaw cycles and for the way the color and texture sit against the home's existing architecture. The layout was drawn to match the home's sight lines, the lawn's natural grade, and the way the family moves between the house, patio, and yard.

The Final Result

A comprehensive Backyard Makeover in Charlotte often involves tackling two of the region’s most common landscape challenges: a useless, small concrete pad and an unusable sloped lawn. Such was the case with a recent project that saw a tremendous transformation. The starting point was a familiar one—a cracked, builder-grade pad and a grassy incline that offered little in the way of recreation or relaxation. The goal was to reclaim this space, and the result was a resounding success, featuring a spacious new paver patio, a critical retaining wall, and a “mostly level” lawn that is now a functional, beautiful asset.

The highlights of this project are definitely the premium materials that were selected to provide both aesthetic appeal and long-term durability. The new patio was constructed using Belgard Arctic Cambridge Cobble Pavers. This was a masterful choice, as the “Arctic” color palette introduces cool, sophisticated tones of grey and white, which visually enlarges the space and provides a modern, clean foundation. The “Cambridge Cobble” style, with its timeless, textured surface, adds a layer of classic charm and character, ensuring the patio will never look dated.

To create the newly leveled lawn area, a structurally sound Timberline Diamond 9D Pro Retaining Wall was installed. This engineered wall system is the unseen hero of the project, holding back the earth and managing the grade change with immense strength. Its “Timberline” finish offers a rugged, natural stone appearance that beautifully complements the paver patio below. By carving into the slope, this wall created a new, usable terrace above.

This newly created, level space was then finished with lush Fescue Grass Sod. Installing high-quality sod provides the immediate gratification of an instant, vibrant green lawn, healing the scars of construction and offering a soft, safe play area for the family.
