The Challenge

This Charlotte, NC homeowner needed an outdoor space that solved a specific problem — drainage, sloped grading, an underused yard, or a transition between indoor and outdoor living — without compromising the look of the home. The Design & Material Selection

For this project we specified premium hardscape materials, chosen for durability in Charlotte's freeze-thaw cycles and for the way the color and texture sit against the home's existing architecture. The layout was drawn to match the home's sight lines, the lawn's natural grade, and the way the family moves between the house, patio, and yard.

A recent project created a little more maintenance-free Outdoor Living for a Charlotte-area backyard by thoughtfully combining three key elements: pristine Artificial Turf, classic Tan Natural Cobble Stone Curbing, and a strategic selection of tall Emerald Green Arborvitae for privacy landscaping. The foundation of this low-maintenance design is the artificial turf. It provides the lush, green appearance of a perfectly manicured lawn year-round, without any of the associated chores of mowing, watering, or fertilizing. Especially as the Carolina seasons change, this evergreen surface remains consistently beautiful, free from muddy patches in the rain or brown spots in the summer heat.

Defining the edge of this pristine greenscape is the Tan Natural Cobble Stone Curbing. This choice adds a touch of timeless, rustic elegance to the design. The warm, earthy tones of the tan cobblestone create a beautiful, natural border that cleanly separates the turf from adjacent planting areas. This permanent, professional curbing provides a crisp, finished look, contains any mulch or soil within the beds, and eliminates the need for seasonal re-edging.

To add a vertical, living element and create a sense of seclusion, a few tall Emerald Green Arborvitae were installed. These evergreens are an excellent choice for privacy landscaping due to their tall, narrow, columnar growth habit. They form a dense, green screen without consuming a large footprint in the yard, making them ideal for a variety of property sizes. As relatively slow-growing and neat trees, they require minimal pruning, further contributing to the low-maintenance ethos of the overall design.
